Outcomes/Research

Mindfulness-based stress reduction (MBSR) has been extensively researched in many settings since its development over 20 years ago by Jon Kabat-Zinn, Ph.D. at the U-Mass Medical Center.  The Insight Center carries on this tradition by conducting research to continually monitor the effectiveness of our stress reduction programs, and to evaluate groundbreaking applications of MBSR.

Program Effectiveness Studies
The majority of participants who complete the Insight Center's MBSR program report significant decreases in both physical and psychological symptoms. The charts below illustrate these results.

Other Studies
The Insight Center collaborates with other organizations and individuals in an active research program.  Projects include studies on the application of MBSR to:

•   immune system functioning in HIV/AIDS
     and breast cancer
•   the treatment of diabetes
•   employee well-being in a corporate setting
•   "stress hardiness" and "sense of coherence"
