MBSR: Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction

Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction
is a structured program which teaches individuals the principles of mindfulness and how to apply them to deal more effectively with stress, illness, and the demands of daily life.  The MBSR program was originally developed at the University of Massachusetts Medical Center by Jon Kabat-Zinn, Ph.D.  He and his staff have gone on to train practitioners and teachers who have established independent MBSR programs throughout the country and the world.

Mindfulness-based stress reduction has been extensively researched in medical and other settings, and has been found to be a helpful adjunct to conventional treatments for a variety of medical and psychological conditions and symptoms.  Click here to learn more about the benefits of MBSR, and to view the results of The Insight Center's Program Effectiveness Studies.

The Insight Center's MBSR Program is based on Kabat-Zinn's U-Mass Medical Center model.  The program teaches mindfulness through body awareness exercises, sitting and walking meditation, and gentle hatha yoga.  It is taught in a group format.

The Stress Reduction Program lasts eight weeks, with weekly two-and-a-half hour sessions, and one all-day Saturday session.  Each participant has an individual interview with the program instructor before and after the program.  Daily at-home practice is required, and practice CDs are provided for this purpose.

The Stress Reduction Program is demanding, and requires a strong commitment from its participants to work on a daily discipline of meditation and relaxation over the eight weeks of the course.  But it can be pleasurable, empowering, and extremely relaxing.

To Enroll
The cost of the MBSR Program, which includes 30 hours of class and individual interview time, as well as practice CDs, text, workbook, and resource manual, is $495.  New classes form on a regular basis (see our Calendar of Events to view the dates of our next scheduled class).
